Sophie’s Advice

High school is ending and it feels very surreal. After four years of football games, dances, classes, and friends, we are all moving on together. When I was a freshman I had no idea who I was or how I would survive the next four years of my life. But, I don’t want any other freshman to experience the same things I did. I have some advice for incoming freshmen that I hope can help someone else feel a little more confident and prepared for their high school career.

First off, when you’re a freshman, it always seems like everyone is looking at you. You feel like everyone sees you doing something embarrassing or weird. It’s important that all incoming freshmen know that nobody is paying any attention to them. All though it sounds harsh, it’s true. Feeling out of place and exposed is normal, but it isn’t a rational fear to have. Try and find the people who do see you and be friends with them.

Another piece of advice I have is to go to all the events Santaluces holds. Go to games, dances, and after school activities. At the time, it’ll seem nerve wracking or unnecessary to attend these events, however, I promise you that by the time you reach the end you’ll wish you went to more. These events are also a great opportunity to meet new friends.

My final piece of advice to any incoming freshmen is to always tell your friends how you feel. This piece of advice can really be applied to anytime in your life, but I think it’s best if you start doing it now. There have been countless fights I’ve gotten into that could’ve been avoided if either myself or a friend of mine had just said what we were feeling. High school is far too short to waste any of it in fights with the people you care about. Telling others how you feel is always a good idea, especially when you only really get four years with some of these people.
