Ali and Jax, which is available every Tuesday on campus, offers a variety of “soft, smooth, sweet Hawaiian shaved ice” for all customers. During both lunches, students flock towards the courtyard to catch the elusive shaved ice truck. Presented by our school’s student body government, the truck has become a popular stop during lunchtime. Out of curiosity, I planned to visit the next truck to try their product.
Immediately when arriving at the truck, I noticed the vibrant colors splashed along the vehicle’s hood and body. Colorful and cartoonish drawings of different fruits cover the truck entirely. Music is also constantly playing in the background, creating a more engaging atmosphere with guests. While waiting in line, I noticed a list of different flavors and toppings that accompany the ice. Some popular flavors are cotton candy, blue raspberry, grape, and tiger’s blood. However, there are ten total flavors to choose from, and Ail and Jax also offer sugar-free options to their menu.
Admittedly, there’s a long wait time at Ali and Jax. Since it’s popularly purchased, the line is extreme. I suggest that if you’re visiting the truck, you should go immediately after the bell rings for your designated lunch time. When I’m ordering my shaved ice, I’m welcomed by kind people who are willing to help me out. My order: a small, also known as the ‘splash,’ grape ice with an additional sour spray.
The prices at Ali and Jax differ. The ‘splash’ ice costs $4.30. This is their smallest option. If you’re looking for a larger size, the ‘low tide,’ is $6.00. Finally, if you want to share an ice with your friends, try purchasing the ‘high tide’ shaven ice for $8.00.
After waiting a long time, I got my shaved ice. After they handed me the ice and before I took my first bite, the worker realized she hadn’t given me sour spray and quickly took my ice back before topping it off.
There are lots of topping choices at Ali and Jax. To add sweetened condensed milk, gummy bears, or marshmallow creme, the price is an extra $0.50. The sour spray and sprinkles toppings are at no additional cost.
Overall, I really enjoyed my shaved ice! Quickly, I had to drink the remainder of the slushie before the Florida sun melted away my ice. The sour spray was extremely evident, and I suggest getting it only if you can handle sour flavors. At the very end of lunch, my friends and I enjoyed the ice before the bell rang.
