The People Have the Power

Award season has officially begun with the fan voted show, People’s Choice Awards, catering to 58 categories, ranging from the traditional honoring of performers, films, shows, and hosts along with quirkier categories like “Favorite TV gal pal,” and “Favorite bromance.”

Before the show started, a few awards were given out on the red carpet including Netflix’s “Orange is the New Black” for Favorite Streaming Series and Favorite Cable TV Drama going to AMC’s Sunday night zombie spectacular, “The Walking Dead.”

Hosting the two-hour long broadcast were duo Kat Dennings and Beth Behrs from CBS’ own “2 Broke Girls.” The pair started out the show by playing waitresses’ for some of the nominees, although the two aren’t Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, they managed to pull out laughs from the audience with Behrs’ on-stage twerking and Dennings’ wit.

The first few winners of the night were Sandra Bullock for favorite movie actress, followed by the man incapable of not winning, Justin Timberlake, for Favorite Album. While accepting the award he thanked his parents for teaching him no dream is too big and his wife, actress Jessica Biel, for teaching him to put the dishes into the dishwasher.

Ellen DeGeneres scooped up her 14th Peoples Choice Award for Favorite Daytime TV Host while Queen Latifah won for Favorite New Talk Show Host, her first People’s choice award.

Favorite Comedic Actor went to Adam Sandler, who accepted the award by thanking his fans and reading a fan letter he had received earlier that thanked him for giving them the “funny feeling in the brain.” Then he joked that the fan was Drew Barrymore.

“The Voice” coaches participated in a People’s Choice award confessional where they answered whether coach Blake Shelton actually drinks a lot on the show, the answer being yes, and discussed the off-screen bromance between host Carson Daly and Coach Cee Lo Green. The show, who won for Outstanding Competition Show at the Emmy’s last year, got the award for Favorite TV Competition Show.

Favorite Comedic Movie went to the Heat, with stars Melissa McCarthy, who’s the first to be nominated for both movie and TV categories, and Sandra Bullock accepting the award.

Favorite On-screen Chemistry got picked up by former real life couple Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev from CW’s “The Vampire Diaries,” whose characters are still dating on the show.

Britney Spears received her first People’s Choice Award for Favorite Pop Artist.  Newly wed Kaley Cuoco, who plays Penny on CBS’ the Big Bang Theory, won for Favorite Comedic TV Actress.

Glee’s Chris Colfer picked up the award for Favorite Comedic TV Actor, for a second consecutive time. Iron Man himself, Robert Downey Jr., won for favorite action movie star and got the tech team to make the microphone deeper and give him a spot light, then he said, “This is for the people.”

Jennifer Hudson got honored with the Favorite Humanitarian Award for her work with the Julian D. King Gift Foundation, which started in the basement of her church to honor her nephew.

The Big Bang Theory picked up the award for Favorite Network TV Comedy for the third year.

Performances included Sara Bareilles’ “Brave,” Brad Paisley with his new song “Mona Lisa,” and One republic’s “Counting Stars.”

The next award show up is the Golden Globes on Sunday, January 12th.
