“Miley, what’s good?”

MTV’s annual VMAs were held Sunday night at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. Every year it is crowded with controversy, from fashion faux pas to who walks away with a moonman. And with Miley Cyrus as the host, this year was no stranger.

In a recent interview with The New York Times, Miley criticized Nicki Minaj for speaking out about her “Anaconda” music video not receiving a nomination for Video of the Year. She told the interviewer that Nicki’s words were “not too kind” but “very Nicki Minaj.”

Some readers took offense to Miley’s words , stating that she was only adding to the narrative that women of color are angrier and more likely to have an attitude. Fans on both sides instantly took to social media to voice their opinions on the matter, calling Miley a “hypocrite.”

Nicki seemed to have kept quiet on the topic, until Sunday night’s show. After accepting her award for Best Hip Hop Video for Anaconda, Nicki thanked her pastor and immediately proceeded to call out Miley for her comments live on the air, saying: “And now, back to this [explicit] that had a lot to say about me the other day in the press. Miley, what’s good?”

The audience cheered when Nicki graced them with her words; Rebel Wilson, who presented Nicki with her award, seemed to have enjoyed the situation. Miley, who was standing on a separate stage opposite Nicki, appeared visibly shocked and responded with: “We all do interviews, we all know how they manipulate things. Nicki, congratulations.”

As with any celebrity feud, the Twitter-sphere erupted with mixed comments from fans on both sides of the frontline. Nicki herself even tweeted out a few heart-faced emojis, which was retweeted numerous times within a matter of seconds.

We can only imagine what next year’s VMAs will bring.
