That’s Groovy Thursday
October 13, 2019
Closing off the long awaited Spirit Week before the pep rally, on Thursday the Chiefs swung their way into the 60s and 70s. The students filled the campus with their tye-dye shirts, flare pants, and flower crowns. The 60s was the decade that introduced the Hippie look, while the 70s further enhanced this fashion with their fringe jackets, retro t-shirts, and maxi dresses.
Dressing up as Velma from the American animated series Scooby Doo, Senior Christina Sentmanat mentioned, “I love how our school comes together as a community to show our school spirit.” Being one of the many students to have helped organize this year’s spirit week, Christina has enjoyed watching the school come alive each day to celebrate Homecoming week.
Throughout the years, many fashion pieces from the 60s and 70s have made a comeback such as denim jackets, bell bottom jeans, and platform shoes. Senior Macie Binda remarked, “I really like how flowy and care-free fashion trends were in the 70s.” Sophomore Katherine Diaz added, “My favorite trend from the 70s would have to be Afros. It was a time when people really started to embrace natural hair.”
With songs such as Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen and September by Earth, Wind, and Fire filling the courtyard, Sophomore Sahara Galuan showed off her spirit by wearing a flower crown and flowy clothes. She says,” I like how care-free everyone was in the 60s and 70s.”
For That’s Groovy Thursday, SGA held Teacher Torture for their lunch activity. Students were invited to pay $1 to spray silly string or splash whipped cream on teachers such as Dr. Snyder, Coach T, and Ms. Henderson. On Friday, Chiefs will prepare to name the next winners of the stick at the pep-rally and determine whether the Seniors are set to be a two-time winning champion.
