In recent years, the topic of whether space exploration is destroying natural resources and wasting money or developing the world has been a controversial topic. While I acknowledge that space research utilizes a plethora of fossil fuels, the study of outer space itself plays a crucial key for advancing human knowledge.
Admittedly, the immense money paid for some outer-space projects could be far more impactful if redirected to tackle urgent global obstacles. For instance, instead of wasting plenty of money to launch satellites, the government could spend that money to help underprivileged people who struggle every second of their life, improving the access to education or funding the renewable energy project.
In 2025, the budget for space programs is about 25.4 billion dollars and this number will increase with every year. Data reveals that although the government and some organizations put an enormous amount of money into space projects, there is no evidence that these investigations or research can change or improve current people’s lives. This misalignment of priorities raises the controversial question on the ethical justification for such spending.
On the other hand, regardless of the disadvantages mentioned above, the outer-space program itself also brings a positive influence to an individual’s life. One example of this is how the program contributes to the advancement of technology and standard of living. Satellites, the innovation which assists with space research, enables global connectivity and accurate weather forecasting. Moreover, some advancements such as portable X-rays or water purification systems help to save and improve the lives of millions of people all over the world.
Although I am comprehensive, tackling the current obstacles of the world plays an essential role in people’s lives. I still hold the strong belief that funding money for space research can be more advantageous for our planet and our future. The space program itself can be a giant leap for mankind, an aspect that money cannot compare to. From my point of view, I hope and believe that one day humans may travel around the galaxy thanks to these projects.
