With the Florida primary quickly approaching, Democratic candidates are getting confusing. This list describes each candidate and their goals.
Bernie Sanders
Sanders wants to fix the prison system by abolishing the death penalty, ending cash bail, and eliminating private prisons. In terms of education, Sanders hopes to restrict charter school growth, make college free for all, cancel all student debt, instate universal free meals in schools, and boost teacher pay. He believes in rent control and taxes to curb speculation, slashing the defense budget, raising taxes on the wealthy, and creating new social programs, including Medicare for all. Sanders wishes to raise the federal minimum wage to $15/hour and he supports several months of broad paid leave. He also believes that the Electoral College should be eliminated. Socially, Sanders is in favor of universal background checks for guns, with few limits, if any, on abortion, and the legalization of marijauna. He also wants to reduce carbon emissions by imposing government regulations.
Elizabeth Warren
Warren wants to fix the prison system by abolishing the death penalty, ending cash bail, and eliminating private prisons. In terms of education, Warren believes in restricting charter school growth, making college free, and canceling some student debt. She believes in slashing the defense budget and allocating federal funds to build more houses. She does not support additional wall funding. Warren wants to raise taxes on the wealthy and create new social programs, including Medicare for all. She hopes to raise the federal minimum wage to $15/hour and she supports broad paid family and medical leave plans up to 12 weeks. Warren hopes to protect the environment by imposing government regulations to reduce carbon emissions and by paying farmers to adopt climate-friendly practices. Socially, she believes in few limits, if any, on abortion and the legalization of marijuana.
Joe Biden
Biden wants to fix the prison system by abolishing the death penalty, ending cash bail, and eliminating private prisons. In terms of education, Biden believes that two years of college should be free and that the government should expand or fix existing debt-relief programs. Biden hopes to protect the environment by taxing carbon emissions and paying farmers to adopt climate-friendly practices. Socially, Biden is in favor of universal background checks for guns, some limits on abortion, and the decriminalization of marijauna. He wants to raise the federal minimum wage to $15/hour, has indicated support for paid family and sick leave, and wishes to increase existing taxes on upper-income Americans. Biden opposes Medicare for all, but would expand coverage. He also wants to pay for infrastructure through changing taxes on corporations and the wealthy. Unlike Sanders, Biden wants to boost the defense budget.
