The comedic drama “War Dogs”, starring Jonah Hill and Miles Teller, is an adrenaline pumping portrayal of a true story almost too wild to believe. Efraim Diveroli (Hill) and David Packouz (Teller) play the roles of two rebellious twenty-somethings scrapping for money. They partner up and start bidding on small defense contracts, primarily supplying weapons to the U.S. government during the Iraq War.
The film had a good balance of comedy and drama, and the laid back, humorous Jonah Hill does an exceptional job in relieving any real tension. The only problem is that sometimes that level of seriousness is required, and that is what the actors lack. The concept of the movie, and the idea of making millions of dollars off of a real war, is not something the public should take lightly. The film desensitizes its viewers to the deadly and scandalous operation of defense contracting. Cutting the humor out would have made more sense in my opinion, as the content is not something to make lighthearted. But then again, it is a movie and it’s made to attract an audience, so it’s understandable.
With that being said, the movie was indeed quite funny at times, and their story is very compelling. The story is easy to follow and the visuals and settings are captivating. If there is one thing to take from this movie, it’s that things aren’t always the way they appear to be.
