As many of us have heard by now, a great discovery about Mars has been made. Water has been found deep in its crust, but do we know what it means for humanity or the red planet?
This is a great discovery, but it was made by accident. A group of scientists were studying the planet so they could understand it and our own planet and came across something. With info from the NASA Insight Lander satellite about the planet’s seismic activity, They believe there is water under the surface. The data says it’s about 7-13 miles deep. But this isn’t the first time water has been there. Mars is 4th from the sun, and used to be completely covered in oceans like Earth , but 3 million years ago the atmosphere got stripped off and all the water evaporated as said by Robert Sanders in his article for news.berkeley.edu.
The findings are amazing and could mean a lot to us. While I believe this could be a great thing, we should leave Mars alone and only observe it. Maybe check in on Mars once in a while so if there is any life or a chance of it developing it can without humans interfering with it. But other chief members have different ideas. I interviewed Mrs. Renzette the Earth Science teacher and she had a lot of things to say about it. She thinks it’s an amazing discovery since people are always excited to discover new life in our solar system and universe. She believes that the discovery makes it an even better planet for us to colonize and that we should. She thinks this will better convince big companies like NASA and SpaceX to go there. We asked her what she thought life on Mars might look like, she didn’t feel sure but she believed that if life could be there, it would be a simple life that requires water. She says that it wouldn’t be as complicated as humans but more like early life on earth when it just started to emerge, like cyanobacteria. But she believes that might be different since our atmospheres aren’t the same.
In conclusion, this discovery could mean a lot for us. This could mean a future where humans could live on another planet or start to in the next few decades. This could also give us a chance to discover new life like early Martians and give us a better understanding of our world and how humans came to be. This could be what lays the groundwork for a new space race and I’m excited to see what could happen.
