It Ends With Us is a movie you can watch in theaters, based on the book by Colleen Hoover. The two main characters are played by Blake Lively (Lily Bloom) and Justin Baldoni (Ryle). It Ends With Us is about a girl who owns a flower shop and gets into an abusive relationship, both physically and mentally, and he makes it hard to leave since he always apologizes. When she finally does leave, she gets into a healthy relationship with an old boyfriend (Atlas) from high school.
The controversy is about how Blake Lively is marketing the movie and not taking the topic as seriously as it actually is. When she is with the press and doing interviews, she turns the movie into an advertisement for her hair care line. She also takes the movie lightly because she does not relate to the story and only understands the surface of the topic. When she advertises the movie, she makes it sound like it is a Rom-Com, mostly in one of her marketing videos with Colleen Hoover. In the video, she states, “Grab your friends, grab your flowers, and go see It Ends With Us.” This is controversial because it shows a lighthearted mood, as if it were a romance movie. Justin Baldoni spends more time talking about domestic violence and understands the depth of the book.
The controversy is also about how the movie is not very accurate to the book, which upsets book fans. The movie left out tons of the abuse done to Lily, and the movie made many sympathize with Ryle. The movie also changed multiple scenes, like the rooftop scene, which was redone by Ryan Reynolds, which angered fans because of how they pictured it. They left out lines from the book, like when Lily’s best friend (Allysa) heard about the abuse earlier on but said it was because of their older brother’s death. So, do you think there should be this much controversy?
