Meet Tracy Torchon, one of our geometry teachers at Santaluces. When asked why she liked teaching high schoolers more than middle schoolers she told me that she knew that high schoolers would focus on studying more. She also likes teaching students who are productive and focused. She is a very productive person, and is always willing to teach her students with the fullness of her heart. If you have a math problem and you brought it to her, she would solve it in a second and give you a detailed explanation of how she did it . She loves students who are willing to study and ask questions. She decorated some corners of her classroom to encourage students who put in effort, and it shows just how much she appreciates students in her class.
Mrs. Torchon has been teaching math for over 20 years, and she graduated from Florida Atlantic University. Math was her favorite subject in school and she also likes science, /8chemistry to be more specific. She would be in the medical field if she was not teaching. She loves her job to the extent that she would name a book written about her life, “Life As A Math Teacher.” Based on what she shared, the difficulty in being a math teacher isn’t rewarded, but she still loves being a teacher. She does even more than just teach; she braids hair, sews different bags, and creates handicrafts that she sells on her own website (something I would never think a math teacher would usually do). Outside of school she enjoys watching TV, doing hair, and going out when she has free time. Mrs. Torchon has a lot of love for the Disney character Stitch, from the Lilo and Stitch film. She collects everything Stitch-related and places them all over her classroom for decoration. Stitch is the first thing you see if you enter her classroom and her house is full of the character. This hobby started two years ago, as she did not grow up watching any kind of cartoons. Her favorite color is blue, which is partly why she loves Stitch and collects anything with him on it . Most of the students noticed this and gave her more Stitch items, which if you’re looking for a birthday present for her, would be perfect!
I have Mrs. Torchon’s class for 7th period, and when I first saw my schedule I was so surprised. It’s such a great thing that I have her class during my first year here. Mrs. Torchon is a great teacher, and was the first teacher I felt free enough to talk to because it was so hard for me to know what to do as a student in a new school. Thank you Mrs. Torchon for everything you have done for me, and I know I could see you as someone I can always go to at Santaluces. Everyone should be able to have teachers that they can go to and who show positive examples for students, like the one Mrs.Torchon had on me.
