Former Secretary of State Colin Powell has died of complications due to COVID-19. His family says he was fully vaccinated.
Powell served as an Army Captain during the Vietnam War, and as both Chairman of the Joint Chiefs and as National Security Adviser. But, he broke barriers by being the first African-American person to become Secretary of State, serving from 2001 to 2005 under the Bush Administration.
“We want to thank the medical staff at Walter Reed National Medical Center for their caring treatment,” Powell’s official FaceBook account posted. “We have lost a remarkable and loving husband, father, grandfather, and a great American.”
Secretary Powell was 84.
