After all of the constant diagnostic and practice testing, Florida Governor Rick Scott has made the decision to cancel the new Florida Standards Assessment (FSA) test for 11th grade students.
Rick Scott has said that public school students are being over-tested, which led to his executive order to cancel the Language Arts standardized assessment for 11th graders. Freshmen and sophomores are still expected to take this test.
“As I have traveled the state, I have heard from parents and teachers that there are too many tests and I agree,” said Scott in a statement, according to the Orlando Sentinel.
This cancellation seems to have come at the wrong time, as many teachers have been diligently preparing there students to properly tackle this test.
“Although it may seem as it most of the year has been wasted for the juniors because of the FSA writing, they are now more prepared for college,” said 11th grade English teacher Ms. Wertman. “Writing is a necessary skill in college and will be utilized more than any other, and we should feel empowered by the juniors’ new writing abilities.”
Of course, teachers aren’t the only ones glad to see the test go.
“I’m super happy that it’s gone,” said junior Bonnie Praphatphong. “It takes stress off of the teachers, and us students too.”
