La Llorona aka the weeping woman, is becoming a movie. Have you heard of her? If not, just know that the tale haunted many children of the Mexican community for generations.
First off, the weeping woman is a Mexican urban legend. The folklore has many different variations, but the most well known lore is said that in a rural village there lived a young woman named Maria who’s husband only paid attention to their two children. As Maria and her children were walking by a river, she saw a familiar carriage with a younger, beautiful woman next to her husband. Maria was so angry and confused that, without thinking, she picked up her two children and threw them into the river, drowning them. She then jumped into the river, hoping to die with her children. Now she spends eternity looking for her children around that river. If you hear her cries, they could bring misfortune. Also it is said that she will creep in the shadows, kidnap the children that resemble hers; then kill them to take place of her own. Many parents in Mexico use this story to scare their children from staying out too late.
To summarize the new movie, it will take place in 1970s Los Angeles, California and be about a social worker and her children being drawn into the weeping women’s path. The trailer also shows the priest from the Conjuring franchise, whom is said to have a big role in this up coming film by being the helping figure for the main character. If you like the Conjuring franchise or if you wanna see a well known folklore on the big screen La Llorona is the movie for you. The movie comes out on April 19th, 2019.
