Ratched is an American, psychological thriller show that premiered on September 18, 2020, on Netflix. It had quickly placed itself onto Netflix’s category of “Top 10 in the U.S. Today.” after its release.
In the first few minutes of the show, it establishes the theme of darkness with manipulative characters and gruesome murders. It sets the tone of the series since, the season is shrouded by mystery, horrific actions, and tension. Throughout the series, you follow the story of Mildred Ratched who has recently moved to Lucia, California, to gain employment at Lucia State Hospital and what she does at the hospital, and why she works there.
As the show continues to revolve around Mildred and clearing the mystery as to why she came to Lucia State Hospital, since it is kept vague throughout, the viewer is able to understand why Ratched is so intriguing. It’s not solely the human interest in the macabre, it’s the realistic portrayal of life and people. There’s no such thing as good and bad. Although Mildred would commit horrific acts and strategically deceive her peers through the season, her character and the way she is portrayed to the viewer makes it harder to hate her. Her reasonings for her heartless persona can be understood and can make you feel pity for her, but don’t be fooled, Ratched is anything but innocent.
Ratched displays characters in a genuine manner and the viewers cannot stop themselves from developing genuine bonds with them. The show symbolizes the angel and devil on each person’s shoulders and excites the viewer to marvel over what’s inside everyone.
