Former police officer, Derek Chauvin, is currently on trial for the murder of George Floyd. Chauvin is entering the third week of the trial. Here’s a recap of what occurred before George Floyd was murdered, Floyd was arrested for using a counterfeit bill. Moments later, the police used excessive force which resulted in his death.
Derek Chauvin put his knee on Floyd’s neck and remained there for nine minutes. He claims that he was doing what he was trained to do. However, other police officers came in and testified. Head of the police department, Lt Johnny Mercil, said it was not proper restraining protocol. Since Floyd was already in handcuffs, there was no need to use such force. The subject of whether or not Chauvin knew Floyd needed medical assistance arises as well.
Chauvin’s defense team said that the hostile environment could have made it hard for Chauvin to make a medical decision on Floyd’s health. To them, because Floyd was speaking, Chauvin didn’t need to worry if he was suffocating Floyd.
Forensic pathologist Dr. Lindsey Thomas stated that the cause of Floyd’s death was asphyxiation. Dr. Andrew Baker declared Floyd’s death a homicide. He refused to change his conclusion.
Nonetheless, according to Derek Chauvin and his defense team, he was only doing what he was trained to do. The trial has yet to be concluded.
