In today’s society, money is necessary for everything to function. Everything runs on money and is very much needed, but there is a line between needing and wanting money. It is okay to want money, but when does it become too much? When does it become greedy?
When chasing money, you can get lost. You don’t see the bigger picture, which can drive you crazy. You seem to prioritize money over everything—over self-love, over family, and friends. The constant chase for money can deteriorate your life. It can be a constant worry on your mind. You’ll see yourself only thinking about money and how to get more every day. It can make you stressed and anxious.
Why is this, though? I believe it has to do with us wanting to be successful and society making money a measure of our success. In today’s world, if you have more money, you are deemed better than someone else. Everyone wants to chase money just so they can beat the next person and be, quote, “better,” but that will just leave you in an endless chase for the next big thing, which will never stop. I don’t agree with this. To quote the rapper Dave in the song Picture Me, he states, “Now you can work a nine-to-five if it makes you smile at night; money ain’t a measure of success, ’cause you can have a billion and dead; you can have 20 grand flats and live a long, long life with no stress.” I agree with his lyrics, as you could have all the money in the world, but what’s the point if you aren’t happy?
Instead, we should settle for what we have and be grateful for it, as there are many more people in a worse position than we are. So don’t let money be a measure of your success, and don’t let it consume your life. It takes time to realize that money and the need for it aren’t as important as we think. Once we stop thinking that and stop wanting more and more, we will be able to find that true success comes with being happy for yourself and with what you have. It’s okay to strive for more, but don’t forget to appreciate what you have, and don’t be greedy with how much more you want.
