This week, I had the privilege to interview Jasmine Brooks, an athlete at Santaluces Community High School. Jasmine is currently in her Senior year and is on the Varsity Cheer team.
Brooks is very new to the cheerleading team; this is her first year. She was inspired by her friend, Tatianah, to join. She was already interested in joining because of seeing how energetic the team was, so she decided to go for it and ended up making varsity.
When she was asked what cheer means to her, she said, “Cheering on this team doesn’t just mean getting to wear the cute uniforms and dance, it’s really about connecting with others/ creating relationships and finding out new personalities and even finding mine through the other girls on the team.”
Jasmine loves cheering now, when she is cheering at the games and at practices, she feels so out of her shell especially because this is something new and she’s finding herself more and more each game.
During the Seminole Ridge football game, she was chosen as the cheerleader of the game for showcasing great leadership, positivity, spirit and dedication during the game. Coach Ross, cheerleading coach, says, “From the start of the season we’ve watched Jasmine work and put the time and effort in, constantly improving week by week. Her determination and perseverance are paying off and her leadership and energy can be felt by everyone around her.”
If she had one piece of advice for any athletic student, then it would be, “If you are really into the sport and you feel as though you can be better.. put that extra work in, it really does help and will get noticed. Also make sure to always keep your grades up and prioritize.”
We look forward to seeing Jasmine Brooks improve even more this season!
