In this edition of The Journey From Campus To Competition, we had a chance to interview soccer player Alex Osorio and take a look into his life as a student athlete and how he manages to balance it all out with his academics.
The Interview
Alex Osorio is a junior at Santaluces High school and plays for the Varsity Boys Soccer team. I started off this interview with the question, “Why choose soccer and what keeps you motivated to play it each day?”
He says, “I was introduced to it by my older brother from watching and playing with him and I fell in love with it, so I kept playing.”
Then I asked him what keeps him motivated to keep playing each day. He says that “Having fun takes my mind off of things when I play soccer, and I find joy in it so I keep playing.”
I also asked “What are your goals with the sport and how will you achieve it?” He says, “I apply the skills I learn while playing soccer into my future endeavors and career pathways.” He states that some of the skills he learned include “working hard, staying consistent, and showing up to practice every day consistently.”
I ask, “Do you do anything else outside of sports?” He states that outside of sports, he spends his time doing “lots of school work, keeping up with his education, participating in school clubs, hanging out with friends, going out to eat, visiting new cities and getting lots of rest.”
After that I asked “How do you balance your school life with sports?” He replies, “I can’t, it’s very difficult. I’m stressed out every minute, but I try to remain calm in these situations and do what I can, and any time I get extra time I try to get my work done.”
Finally I asked, “Do you have any advice for other up and coming student athletes, or those who are afraid to start?”
He states the most important thing is to “Be yourself, don’t be anyone else.”
