Bill Nye, a mechanical engineer, a comedian, an educator, and a scientist with the proud title of “The Science Guy,” has been in the news frequently recently.
His three-week spot on Dancing with the Stars and the upcoming March 4th debut of his profile on the PBS show, “The Secret Life of Scientists and Engineers” have put the 1990s science show host back into the limelight.
This limelight only grew bigger in response to his recent Creationism debate with Ken Ham, in which Nye defended evolution, and school children’s rights to be taught such scientific theories in the classroom. As a result, news spread of the murder America’s beloved “Science Guy.” His killer was a man who explained that his actions were forced upon him by God.
However, this Twitter-spread rumor was a hoax. Bill Nye is alive and well.
This hoax was spread to other social media sites such as Facebook and Tumblr by their fooled and disgruntled users. Text posts read, “Bill Nye Found Dead. Suspect apprehended claims, “God made me do it!” There were even YouTube videos that shared the same or similar titles; however, these links led to a video of Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up.”
This isn’t the first time America has been “Rickrolled,” so to speak, by a Nye death hoax. There were other rumors of Bill Nye dying in August of 2012 and November of 2011, but, despite his many ‘deaths,’ Bill Nye continues to be “The Alive Guy.”
