Full Sail University hosted a Tech Fest at our school back in March, with the main event being qualifiers for their own Super Smash Bros. tournament in May, which many of our Chiefs were eligible for. On Saturday, May 10th, students Recardo Lee, Cole Montag (me), and Yazir Madbouly travelled all the way to Full Sail’s “Fortress” to compete against students across the state for up to $15K in scholarships! Without further ado, I’m proud to say that Yazir Madbouly placed in 1st for the school, marking Santaluces Community High School’s first Esports win at state!
Last year was our team’s first time at tournament and Full Sail, reaching Top 8 out of hundreds, along with performing well in an online tournament hosted by EGFH. This year’s win at a state championship, though, cements Chiefs Esports among the many great teams here at Santaluces.
Meet our players!
Recardo Lee – Top 128, played Ganondorf (main)
“It was a great experience seeing as I was able to give the 4th place contender a run for his money in the first round of ours. It was good to see where I needed practice and I wanted to see what I could improve on in my free time if I ever decided to do more local Smash tournaments.”
Cole Montag – 5th Place, played Samus (main) and Terry (secondary)
“For my second time at Full Sail, I had an even better time! I managed to place higher than last year, only losing to the 3rd place contender Caleb, and stuck around to support our best player Yazir for the finals. It’s sad that Full Sail hosted this in the Spring around testing, but I think we all did great despite the stress waiting for us back home. As president of the club, I can guarantee that next year will be amazing for the team, and I think Yazir’s well-deserved win marks the start of this new era.”
Yazir Madbouly – 1st Place, played PAC-Man (main)
