Santaluces girls volleyball season is here! We had the opportunity to interview some students with questions on how they feel about their sport volleyball. These girls dedicate themselves to their sport each game and practice so they can win. We wondered what goes on behind the scenes of the girls volleyball team and what it’s like, so we asked!
Amy Soria Galvarro is a junior who plays for the Santaluces varsity volleyball team. She plays defensive specialist and back row. Her mom was a volleyball player so growing up she would play with her family members every weekend. “I love the thrill and adrenaline and the split second decisions you have to do constantly!” It is a very rewarding sport as you can see all the hours of practice pay off when you win a game. This is what Amy says is her favorite part.
Aliyah Cantu is a freshman on the JV volleyball team here at Santaluces. She says that the practices are really fun, and that the coaches are working with their team to get even better. Her position on the team is outside hitter. “I’ve been playing volleyball for almost 2 years”. She thinks that anyone who has an interest in volleyball should try it out. “It is so worth it, the team and coaches are great.”
Fatima Parra Gutierrez is a Junior who plays for the Santaluces JV Volleyball team. “My favorite part of volleyball is my team, the amount of teamwork and strategy involved on the court and off the court is really incredible. Being able to make split-second decisions and watching all of our hard work being paid off on the court.”Although sometimes their practices can be intense they know they will soon be rewarded with wins. Their coaches help them to refine their skills, work on their overall fitness and help to build strong team chemistry. “Our practices consist of a mix of drills, strategy sessions and competitive plays with the team to keep us ready and sharp for any matches!”, says Fatima. She plays as an outside hitter, which involves hitting and blocking on the front left side of the court.
We asked, “Would you recommend others join the Santaluces volleyball team?” She responded, Of course! Joining the Santaluces volleyball team is the best opportunity, it is not all about the playing part of the sport but also being part of a supportive and dedicated community. The experience will be both challenging and rewarding. It’s a great way to build long-lasting friendships and improve as an overall athlete!
The volleyball team works very hard, with practices right afterschool then games that night. If you have an interest in volleyball make sure to keep a lookout for the tryout information at the beginning of next school year. Another option is beach volleyball, the tryout information will be coming out in the spring of this school year. Their next game is 9/16 against Dreyfoos School of the Arts, go check them out if you get a chance!
