Santaluces had its first student athlete sign to a college on Wednesday. Senior Justin Tworek committed to Santa Fe Community College and is set to play baseball in Gainesville next year.
Tworek chose Santa Fe over four different schools including Lynn University and Palm Beach State.
“[Gainesville] is a comfortable town,” said Tworek, “and they have a good baseball team.”
Every year, the entire senior class feels the pressure of applying to a college and hoping they get accepted. The anxiety of it all usually gets to them, but not for Tworek. His 3.5 GPA and exceptional play on the diamond earned him a full-ride scholarship.
“I’m very proud of him,” said his mother, Tammy Tworek, “it’s just awesome. Something we didn’t expect.”
Along with his parents, junior and brother Chad Tworek and Athletic Director Shannon Livingston, joined the ceremonial signing.
The Chiefs made it to the playoffs for the first time since 2005, but lost in the first round last season. This year, Justin is set to take the mound as a starting pitcher for a high school team. Next year, he’ll be taking his talents to the next level.
“I’m excited,” said Tworek, “it feels like a load has been lifted off my back.”
