Preparing for the Art Show
All of the art departments were preparing for the art show, and the week of the art show was probably the most frantic. Everyone was trying to get their photos printed and prepared and some people (including me) hadn’t even taken all of their photos, so I had to cram. Most people in my class were ready for the art show by the end of the day, with the exception of a few who hadn’t even finished labeling their pictures.
School ends at 2:40 pm and the art show begins at 6:00 pm, Most people had put up their displays by 3:00 pm and had gone home to take get dressed and relax before the show. I don’t have a car and I didn’t have a ride home so I hung around the 4000 building until 6 and watched the remaining people who hadn’t completed their displays get their lives together. All of the art teachers appeared to be frustrated and stressed during the preparation of the show, but the closer it came to 6 pm, the more they cooled down.
Show Time
Around 5:30 I changed out of my gym shorts and sandals with no socks, into my nice dress clothes. I had to wash my face and fix my hair in the school bathroom which was a little messy, but I looked presentable. Around 6 pm many people had already been strolling around admiring everyone’s art. Most were parents, students, teachers or friends of students. It was really cool to see Everyone’s work from the Draw, Photo and Film classes and I felt proud to say that I was a student at Santaluces.
Another great part of the art show is the feedback you receive from so many people, even complete strangers. One parent came up to me and asked me if I had taken these pictures, she guessed it was me because I was standing close by, and I was also the model in my photos. She told me about how much she loved my photos and how brave I was for my artwork.
My Photography
The central idea of my photography focused on being yourself and not being able to express yourself however you please. Many people my age and in high school keep quiet and try not to bring too much attention to ourselves because we fear what people may think. We’re afraid to be perceived as outsiders. People will talk negatively about you until the day you die, so if they aren’t supporting and motivating you, what they have to say doesn’t matter.
You have to live your life the way you want. Say what you want to say, do what you want to do, go where where you want to go, wear want you want to wear, and be who you want to be. Cry if you need to cry, laugh if you want to laugh, and dance if you’re in the mood.
Just to know that my artwork affected people so much and that she loved it was enough motivation to keep working on my photography even after I graduate and improve on my work. I suggest to anyone who is thinking about becoming part of the Art Academy at Santaluces to take a class or talk to some of your friends and see how you like it. You’ll learn so much, meet some incredible people and work with some of the best teachers at Santaluces.
