Finally, after a month of sweat and tears the World Cup has come to an end. This year’s champions weren’t exactly expected, but it wasn’t surprising at the same time. Germany started out as the underdogs of the cup; no one was really paying much attention to how they were doing or even thought they were going to make it as far as they did.
But in the end, Germany dominated the field and that led to their impressive win in the final game. Germany only won by one point but you don’t really pay much attention to the number of goals but more to how the goals are scored. Mario Gotze led the team to victory with one of the most impressive, quick-thinking goals I’ve ever seen. With just a hit to the chest and a simple kick, Germany has become the new world champions and it was a well-deserved win.
Argentina’s Lionel Messi had the honor of obtaining the “balon de oro” or golden ball that is given to the player who played the best throughout the games. In my opinion, Messi did not deserve the golden ball and it’s sad that the ball was given to a player who didn’t really do anything that extraordinary that was worthy of that award.
Messi is a great player; there’s no denying it, but honestly he isn’t the God that people make him out to be. There were so many others who deserved the Gold ball but didn’t get it, such as Thomas Mueller, Bastin Scweinstegier, Mario Gotze and especially Andre Schurrle. The games are over now and there’s nothing to be done, the award was given to Messi and that’s final. All we can do now is hope that in the next World Cup, they will give the Golden Ball to someone who goes above and beyond from start to finish and proves to the world why he is worthy of that prestigious award.
One of the most heartbreaking moments of the games would have to be the reaction of the fans. Brazil and Germany played to determine which team was going to the finals, and that game was one of the most shocking games I have ever witnessed in all the years that I have watched the World Cup. Germany massacred Brazil with a score of 7 to1 and every goal that was made was back to back. The game was horrifying to the players, the coach, but mostly to all the fans.
In the stands all you could see was children in tears; fans face paint dripping from the immense amount of crying, and also fans exiting the stadium because they couldn’t stay to watch another minute. Even after the amount of goals, Brazil managed to score one goal which was better than no goals at all.
Then, Argentina and Netherlands played to determine who would go on to the finals, and it was a close match until the penalty kicks when Argentina dominated overall. The saddest sight was when the camera pointed to Robbens’ 5 year old son, Luka in the arms of his mother, crying hysterically.
Although there were lots of heartbreaking moments, there was one moment that was so heartwarming, it truly represented why they have the games in the first place. When Colombia lost to Brazil 2 to 1, James Rodriguez was in tears but was comforted by player David Luiz, who then ended up trading shirts with the Colombian player. It was the most beautiful moment of the World cup that could bring anyone to tears and brought a bigger meaning to the games.
Overall, this year’s World Cup was one that will be remembered for years to come. All teams had potential but there is still work that needs to be done in some. Some outcomes were happy, others extremely disappointing and some outcomes were shocking, but that’s what makes these games so exciting and fun to watch. It’s sad to see them go and having to wait another four years doesn’t make things any better.
Over the next four years all we can hope for is that the team we root for can increase in skill. The World Cup is unpredictable and any team can win. Who knows, maybe next year a South American or even Central American country could take the gold. For now, all we can do is wait and hope the for the best in Russia 2018.
