Netflix’s new movie “Enola Holmes” introduces Sherlock Holmes’ vivacious 16-year-old sister. The movie is based on a book series by Nancy Springer. Her character is a spin-off of Sherlock Holmes. They share their love of solving mysteries but differ in their spirit.
The story follows Enola waking up to her mother’s unexpected disappearance. Her older brothers, Mycroft and Sherlock, attempt to send her away to boarding school after seeing the unorthodox way her mother raised her. However, Enola has other plans and sets out on an adventure to find her mother. On her way, she encounters many challenges and secrets of the past.
Millie Bobby Brown offers a breathtaking performance of a strong-willed young woman. She embraces feminist values and serves as a role model for viewers. Her mother taught her many things that young women at the time were discouraged to learn, like martial arts and science.
One of the best parts is Enola’s relationship with Sherlock. He contrasts Mycroft in the way that he truly cares for her and recognizes her capabilities. They share many of the same qualities and their attempts to outwit each other are very entertaining.
Her relationship with her love interest, Viscount Tewkesbury, is really enjoyable to watch. Their encounter starts out as an obstacle in her journey but diverts into a subplot that takes on the majority of the movie.
On the other hand, the ending felt a little rushed and the original storyline was pretty much forgotten by the end. Tewkesbury’s issues overshadow her own and she feels the need to save him. Also, the ending is confusing without some historical context and the plots don’t exactly mesh well together.
Overall, Enola Holmes is an amazing movie that is worth the watch.
