On October 24, 2025, Canadian singer Daniel Caesar, whose real name is Ashton Simmonds, released an album through Republic Records called Son of Spergy. This album was inspired by the reunion with his parents. The name of the album got its meaning from his father’s nickname: “Spergy”. The Son of Spergy album is a modern R&B and soul masterpiece exploring themes of faith, family, and reconciliation (reunion) with Caesar’s father, Spergy. It has a total of 12 songs and features a mix of gospel, soul, and alternative rock influences with notable key tracks. Some of these include “Rain Down,” “Have a Baby (With Me),” “Moon” (featuring Bon Iver), and, the father-son narrative, “Baby Blue.” Caesar’s album features collaborations with singers Sampha, Bon Iver, Yebba, Blood Orange, his brother Zachary Simmonds, and even the source of the album, his own father, Norwill Simmonds, who is a gospel singer.
I, personally, have loved Daniel Caesar since middle school. I know old songs, new songs, released songs, unreleased songs. I’m a pretty frequent listener, which is why I’m even writing this story. Every album he makes has a meaning, and this is evident by the tone of his voice when he sings certain lines. The lyrics, the beat, everything comes together to make one of the most angelic and divine albums I’ve ever heard. It was soul-touching, and I, honestly, really like music that can have me feeling some type of way.
