Democrats have been pushing for the impeachment of President Trump since the beginning of his presidency. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has been cautious to move forward on the issue, that is until September 14, when she announced a formal impeachment inquiry on President Trump.
This came after a recent series of events in which a whistleblower from the White House reported that the President was requesting Ukraine to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden over a phone call. They reported that President Trump was attempting to cover up this phone call, days later he released the transcript. A whistleblower is a person that exposes illegal actions within an organization, till this point the name of the whistleblower has not been released.
“This week, the President has admitted to asking the President of Ukraine to take actions which would benefit him politically. The actions of the Trump presidency revealed the dishonorable fact of the President’s betrayal of his oath of office, betrayal of our national security and betrayal of the integrity of our elections,” said Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.
Trump has been under much scrutiny in the past, as Democrats have accused him of working with Russia during the 2016 election which resulted in a 3-year investigation conducted by special investigator Robert Mueller. In the end, Mueller came up empty-handed and couldn’t prove that President Trump had collaborated with Russia.
More than half of Democrats in the House are in favor of the impeachment inquiry. Even if the vote advanced through House it is not likely that it would pass in the Republican-controlled Senate. This would result in gridlock, or not being able to pass a law because the two houses disagree.
“THE GREATEST SCAM IN THE HISTORY OF AMERICAN POLITICS!” tweeted Trump in response to the inquiry.
President Trump has denied any allegation of pressuring Ukrainian President Volodymyr. Trump claims that Biden called for the ousting of a Ukranian prosecutor who threatened his son’s business in Ukraine.
With the 2020 election closing in, the outcome of this inquiry could have huge effects on Trump’s re-election campaign. However, it is important to keep an open mind since the story is still developing and whether or not the inquiry could lead to impeachable offenses, only time can tell.
