On November 22, 2021, Malcolm X’s daughter, Malikah Shabazz, was found dead at the age of 56 in her apartment complex in Brooklyn, New York.
Malikah Shabazz was the youngest of six children born to Malcolm X and his wife Betty Shabazz.
Malcolm X was an African American civil rights activist who is considered to be one of the greatest and influential African Americans.
He was born Malcolm Little, but after he converted to Islam, he abandoned the “slave name,” Little, and took the moniker “X.”
The animosity between Malcolm and the Nation of Islam grew because of his beliefs regarding civil rights and segregation. As a result, three members of the Nation of Islam ran onto the stage as he prepared to give a speech, shooting him several times, pronouncing him dead at the scene on February 21, 1965.
Three men were arrested, and recently, as of 2021, two of three men have been exonerated of all charges.
A few days after the announcement that those men were exonerated, Malikah’s body was found unconscious by her daughter. However, police believe that she died of natural causes.
Bernice King, the daughter of Martin Luther King Jr. posted on Twitter sending her condolences.
“I’m deeply saddened by the death of #MalikahShabazz. My heart goes out to her family, the descendants of Dr. Betty Shabazz and Malcolm X.”, she says.
“Dr. Shabazz was pregnant with Malikah and her twin sister, Malaak, when Brother Malcolm was assassinated.”
“Be at peace, Malikah.”
