Lusia Harris was born on February 10th, 1955 in Minter City, Mississippi and died on January 18th, 2022 in Mound Bayou, Mississippi at the age of 66. She graduated from Delta State University with a Bachelor’s degree in 1977 for recreation, health, and physical education. Lusia married George E. Stewart in 1977 and they had four children together. She spent most of her childhood on a Vegetable farm in Minter City and played basketball with her siblings. She joined the school basketball team in middle school and high school, and was eventually recruited by Delta State University for basketball.
Lusia Harris is known as one of the best basketball players. She was the only woman to ever be drafted by an NBA team and was nicknamed the “Queen of Basketball.” She was also the first woman to score a basket in the Olympics and she was a three time all American, leading Delta State University to three (AIAW) National Championships. She was inducted in the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame and was the first Black woman to be inducted in the Naismith Hall of Fame. When she participated in the Olympic Games she won a silver medal in 1976.
