Recently, I have felt like the world in which we live is straight out of a science fiction movie. Humans are beginning to create things that were once considered pure fiction. Robots that can move and talk are becoming more of a reality, and cars are now driving themselves across many cities globally. And now, scientists have created an artificial heart- a heart made out of titanium.
The heart is the central organ in the cardiovascular system, and is one of the most important parts of our body. One of the reasons as to why it is so important is because the heart pumps blood and oxygen to your body, something that a human being wouldn’t be able to live without.
The titanium heart isn’t the first artificial heart in the world. Besides titanium hearts, scientists already have created (VAD) ventricular assist devices, along with left ventricular assist devices(LVAD), and right ventricular assist devices (RVAD), to assist the left and right side of the heart.
So, how do these artificial hearts work? Well, a human heart has 2 sides. One pumps blood to the lungs and the other pumps it to the body to keep you alive. An artificial heart does the same things with your body and lungs. It supports your heart when one of the 2 sides doesn’t have the ability to pump blood anymore. Some of them also help weak heart pumps better.
As of now, it is not possible to live with an artificial heart forever, but it is very useful for the longevity and quality of life of people with heart issues. In fact, recently a man from Australia became the first person to be discharged with a titanium heart for 100 days. Therefore, I believe that in the future, scientists will be able to create artificial hearts that will be able to successfully replace real ones. Although it may face obstacles in terms of resources and financement, I believe that it is something that can be achieved in the future.
