With a dominating win over John I. Leonard Friday, the Santaluces Chiefs (5-3) officially move to third in district standings, behind only Palm Beach Central (5-3) and Park Vista (7-1). The Chiefs were able to move ahead of Boca Raton with a 40-0 blowout.
Senior Luis Martinez opened up the scoring with a 12-yard strike to junior Mike Moise. The Chiefs drove down the field with virtually no problem and ended with an athletic grab in the corner of the end zone. The pass was one of two touchdown throws for Martinez that night. The second went to senior UM prospect Darrell Langham.
Senior Bernard Eberhardt scored twice last week as well. One touchdown came from one yard out. The other was an explosive 60-yard punt return touchdown- his first of the season.
The Chiefs now remain one win away from second place in district play. Park Vista has clinched a playoff berth with last week’s victory over Boca Raton, which dropped the Bobcats underneath the Chiefs in the standings.
The Chiefs play Spanish River next week for their final district game of the season. A win doesn’t exactly mean playoffs just yet. Palm Beach Central will go on to play Park Vista on the Broncos home field. If the Broncos give the Cobras their only district loss of the season, then they will go on to the playoffs. A Park Vista win, along with a Chiefs victory over the Sharks, will force a tie in district standings.
The Sharks haven’t won a district game since 2008, so a Chiefs win is well within the realm of possibility. However, the Cobras haven’t lost a game since losing to Ohio power Colerain, winning seven straight regular season bouts. The Broncos are on a four game winning streak after finding an answer to their quarterback questions with senior Kemar Downer.
