Sports Photography is a very creative hobby. It is fast paced, action packed, and skill-demanding in order to capture the perfect moments at the right time. An amazing shot can be missed in the blink of an eye, so you must be quick and stay on your A-game. There are many tips people can give to beginners, but here are the three main important ones:

1. Learn your Camera Basics

After you find a camera that fits your requirements, you must take the time to learn your camera. Practice adjusting the settings such as shutter speed, ISO, and focus modes. Shutter speed is how long your camera’s shutter stays open and lets in light. A faster shutter speed is optimal for sports due to the fast paced action. Your ISO is how sensitive your camera is to light.  Depending on how the lighting is in your area is what determines the level your ISO should be on. Focus modes control how your camera focuses on a subject. Continuous auto-focus is best for sports photography due to the fast moving subjects. This allows for the focus to stay on the main subject at all times.

2. Practice at local games

The best way to learn and grow your skills is with practice. Try going to local parks, or even schools in your area with sports events going on. This allows you to build your experience while also building a portfolio for yourself. The more games you go to, the better you will get, and the more people will begin to recognize your work.

3. Review and improve your photos

After the game is over, you must go home and look through your work. Check your pictures to see if they came out clear and centered properly. Once you find the pictures you like, you must begin editing. It may take some time to learn how to edit and learn your style, but it will be worth it in the end. Editing and learning from your mistakes helps you get better and grow every time you shoot.

Once you begin to apply these three steps, you will start to see a great improvement in your work.
