The Lady Chiefs basketball team won a thriller Tuesday night against Wellington at home. The regional semi-final game came down to the wire, but the Chiefs came out on top by a score of 56-51. The girls are one win away from heading to Lakeland for the state championship. The game started close as Chief and Wellington fans cheered while the Chief percussion section played. By the end of the first quarter, the Wellington Wolverines were up 18-15. But the Chiefs, led by Whitney Howell with 14 points came back and went ahead 36-27 at the half. Junior Emiah Downie hit an impressive half court shot at the buzzer that didn’t count. After halftime, the Wolverines came back with an 11-0 run and to end the third quarter within two points of the Chiefs. The fourth quarter had Wellington up by three points, but the Chiefs buckled down and were ahead 51-49 with 1:23 left in the game. But the Chiefs held on to win by five.
The girls will play Friday for a chance at the state championship.
