Famous Minecraft Youtuber ‘Dream’ did a face reveal on October 2nd, 2022. The YouTuber had begun back in 2014 and continued uploading Minecraft content. His content was purposely aimed at “triggering” his viewers which consisted of playing the game, Minecraft, terribly. Only two days after he began, his videos would reach 200,000 views. Not soon after he made three more videos that reached over 2 million views in under two weeks. By the end of July, Dream had gained more than 54,000 subscribers.
The Youtuber continued to gain millions of subscribers for the years to come, still creating material like his “Minecraft Speedrunner vs.” series, “Minecraft. But Item Drops Are Random And Multiplied..”, etc. He collaborated with GeorgeNotFound, who was slowly becoming popular as well.
Dream also faced harsh criticism for supposedly cheating in Minecraft. On December 11, 2020, speedrun forum moderator Geosquare posted a video on Youtube called,”Did Dream Fake His Speedruns- Official Moderator Analysis.” Mods soon came to the conclusion that the recorded events were too statistically unlikely for Dream to not have used the help of cheats or mods. Dream responded with his own study, denied the allegations, and came to his own conclusion that the odds of his run taking place were in fact 1 in 100 million. More of the speedrunning mods continued to dismiss his study until Dream responded in a final tweet stating, “this drama has been stressful for most of the Minecraft community, and a lot of that was probably due to my original response to the drama, so I take full responsibility for that.”
Dream continued to face harassment, including a doxing rumor on January 1, 2021. Despite the negative events, the Youtuber continued to upload content that became popular quickly, including his roleplaying server that was created in May of 2020.
In June of 2021, the streamer announced to his fans that there would eventually be a face reveal. Fans urged the Youtuber to take action, resulting in a well-deserved review. During his official face reveal video, which drew over 1.5 million viewers in the premiere alone, Dream finally took off the mask. This caused many mixed emotions from his viewers, some responded with positive messages, while others were outraged. Not long after the reveal, the hashtag “#PutTheMaskBackOn”.
We talked to Santaluces 9th grade student Gemma Castuita and asked her what she thought about the situation to which she replied,” I think his fanbase hyped him up way too much, he looks like just an average guy.”
We also talked to Santaluces guidance counselor Kristen Harell, who expressed that events with such internet hate could have a serious impact on teens. She said, “Teens who have negative experiences on social media have a heightened risk for mental health problems. It can affect teens by, distracting them, disrupting their sleep, and exposing them to bullying, rumor spreading, unrealistic views of other people’s lives and peers.”
