When was the last time you went outside to play, run, or move? For many young people today, it’s hard to see them truly enjoy nature or even spending more time exercising. Unlike their grandparents’ and parents’ generation, today’s youth seem more inactive.
On the surface, this concern may seem justified. There is a whole industry that encourages children to live a sedentary lifestyle. For example, instead of giving students more outdoor projects, teachers tend to assign homework through computers and expect students to finish it on time. Because of this, students have fewer opportunities to interact with nature after school, as they still have homework and may be too tired from school and go to sleep instead.
Furthermore, it can also be argued that young people are adapting to the society they live in, which is completely different from the world their parents grew up in. With the fast growth of industrialization, everything seems more rushed and busy than it ever was before. Roads have become busier than they were in the past, making it very difficult for children to play outside. Moreover, with the dangerous outside factors, such as increasing crime rates, make many parents understandably concerned about their child’s safety.
In conclusion, it is an undeniable fact that children today are less active than those in the past. However, it is not fair to compare them in this way. It is wrong to play all the blame on technology. Children should be encouraged to participate in sports at school, and parents should be more willing to support their children in exploring the world around them.
