Nalani Moffett, a 12th-grade student and president of Santaluces’ Black Student Union, plays a major role in organizing and leading the club’s activities. Inspired by her passion for leadership and event planning, Nalani enjoys seeing ideas come together and making a positive impact within the Santaluces community.
Although the organization is called the Black Student Union, Nalani emphasizes that BSU is open to everyone. Students of all races, genders, and orientations are encouraged to join, participate, and share their perspectives in a welcoming environment.
Behind the scenes, planning Black History Month takes careful thought and collaboration. Nalani works closely with BSU officers and club sponsors to create an agenda that balances education, culture, and fun while appealing to both students and staff. From scheduling performances to organizing panels and spirit week activities, much of the work happens long before the events take place.

This year’s events include a spirit week at the end of the month, a jazz performance by the Santaluces Band, and a student-led panel where participants can openly discuss generational differences between Millennials and Gen Z. Each activity is designed to encourage student engagement and meaningful conversations.
As both the BSU president and the school’s dance captain, Nalani is especially excited to combine both roles during the BSU performance on February 19 in the courtyard. She notes that one of the most rewarding parts of BSU is that it is largely student-led, with members taking responsibility for planning, organizing, and executing events.
Through teamwork, creativity, and leadership, BSU continues to work behind the scenes to bring impactful experiences to the Santaluces community.
