The Santaluces girls soccer team is back on the field this season, but what most people see during games is only a small part of what really goes on behind the scenes. From discipline to team bonding, the players put in work long before they step onto the turf.
We spoke with Ana Sustaita, a senior who has been playing soccer for 10 years, to learn more about what happens beyond game day. Ana shared that practices are about much more than drills and conditioning. “Behind the scenes, it’s really about sportsmanship and discipline,” she explained. As a veteran player, she knows the commitment it takes to stay focused throughout the season.
Ana also opened up about her journey with the sport, which hasn’t always been simple. “My journey with soccer hasn’t been easy with going through injuries every year and other obstacles with the team,” she said. Even so, soccer remains a constant source of comfort. “Soccer has always been my escape from everything. Every setback has taught me something about my life outside of soccer.”
We also interviewed Allison Mares, a sophomore in her first years with the team. She joined the program because of a childhood love for the sport. “I’ve always loved soccer as a kid and never got the chance to play on a club or team,” Allison said. “Coming into high school and having the chance to try out made the child in me come out with joy.”
Although she doesn’t play outside of school, Allison shared that the team’s chemistry makes the experience special. “We bond through group chats, social media, and even having classes together,” she explained. “It helps us get to know each other and understand everyone’s sense of humor.”
Together, players like Ana and Allison show that the girls soccer team is built on hard work, support, and a shared love for the game. And while fans cheer from the stands, the real growth happens behind the scenes where these athletes put in the time, effort, and heart to represent Santaluces on the field.
