Since graduating in 2017, Yoana Velasquez has been busy following the path of many other graduates: working and continuing her education. Yoana, who recently helped donate office and school supplies to teachers here at Santaluces also reminisced about her time here and her future plans.
What are some of your favorite memories at Santaluces?
“Some of my favorite memories at Santaluces I would have to say were going to the pep rallies, and the soccer, football and basketball games were really fun. I spent most of my time watching the games.”
Are you still in touch with high school friends?
“In high school I knew, spoke with, and hung out with a lot of people. After I graduated I only kept in touch with three good friends. Your circle starts big freshman year and as the years go by you grow older, wiser, and realize who your real friends are and see what is best for you.”
What do you miss most about high school?
“I miss going to high school in general. If I could relive it I’d do it all over again. But what I really miss is the 4 main teachers that actually showed me they cared for me, motivated me, actually tried to educate me, and respected me as a person, not a child. Shout out to Mrs. Harms, Mrs. Schroader, Mr. Yohe and Mr. Mulligan! Love them and am still in contact with them now. They’re awesome.”
Looking back on your high school experience, what advice would you offer to current students?
“Stay on track! Stop worrying about dumb things! Stay focused, get your diploma, and start your career. You’re at school to learn, not to make friends! Nothing lasts forever; forever doesn’t exist. Do what’s in your best interest!”
Finally, can you tell us more about what you are up to now with work and/or school?
“I recently graduated from school for Expanded Functions Dental Assistant. I want to go back to school to become a Hygienist actually. Now I am a Dental Assistant for an office in Boyton. I’ve been here for a while now and I love it! I’ve seen some interesting things—something new everyday! The pay is great! Going to school was all worth it.”
