Today, I caught up with Santaluces Girls’ soccer star Maria Gutierrez. We asked her about her goals, what she enjoys the most about soccer and her expectations for this season.

“My goal for this year is to elevate my game from last year and get all-around better,” said Maria. The Lady Chiefs are off to a slow start this year posting a 2-4-1 record, but there is plenty of time for a huge turnaround, which leads me to my next question.

We asked her expectations for this year, especially with an injury-ridden team. “My expectations for this year are to hopefully have a turnaround and make the playoffs,” said Maria.

Also, this being her last year, we asked her how she feels knowing this will be her last year. “I have enjoyed the bonds I have created with my teammates; they are bonds I will never forget.”

She then went on to state that this year has been the most fun she has had playing the sport.
