About the Series
The start of the school year means the start of a wonderful new series, The Journey from Campus to Competition. This will be a series of inspiring lifestyle and advice articles each about an athlete at Santaluces High. The content will be interviews of each athlete where we ask questions getting more insight into their life as a student, a kid at home, and as an athlete trying to make it into the professional world.
The Interview
David Vega is a junior at Santaluces who plays for the varsity basketball team and varsity volleyball team for the school. We started off the interview with the question, “What keeps you motivated to play these sports?” David says “It’s for my family.” He does this to hopefully support his family in the future by playing basketball or volleyball. Afterwards I ask “what are your goals with the sport?”.
He says that he doesn’t want to but he will make it to the league or rather the NBA.
Next I ask him “Do you do anything else outside of school?” It turns out he also plays a FPS game known as “Valorant” professionally.
That is a lot for a student athlete, knowing junior year is the hardest year for students. I ask him “How will you achieve your goals, and how will you balance this life with school?” He says “consistency is key”, keeping a steady schedule that you repeat each day will lead you to success. After school he goes to the gym and afterwards he works on his school work. He also said “Student athlete, student comes before athlete, prioritize your school work.” I asked “When do you usually sleep?”, he states “10pm everyday”. Finally I ask him “Do you have any advice for those who wanna do what you do?”, he says “Day one or one day?”
“Just put in the work and it will all work out in the end”.
