Being able to sew and create clothing and other items out of fabric is a skill that is so useful in a person’s day to day life. It can open new avenues to create, and it is an amazing and useful hobby to cultivate. Here are some useful tips to get started on your sewing journey!
#1- Practice on Scrap fabric
When first starting out sewing, it is important that you start with fabric from old or discarded clothes and things instead of buying brand new fabric. For one, fabric by the yard can be very expensive especially if the fabric is being shipped to you. As a beginner learning how to sew, you will probably end up making lots of mistakes when sewing, which is completely expected. However, since you will be making many mistakes, you wouldn’t want to waste expensive fabric if your project may end up not fitting or functioning well. Instead, use scrap fabric from old clothes, bedsheets, etc. to start with and hold off on the more expensive fabric until your skills improve.
#2- Start with Small Projects
Choosing sewing projects to start with can be exciting, but its important to pick a project that a beginner can realistically do. For example, when I first started sewing I was very young, so the majority of my projects were for my dolls. Being able to do small projects like this truly helped me better my sewing ability, and gave me a stronger foundation when I started sewing clothes for myself. Small projects that you can start out with as a beginner can be things like napkins, small makeup pouches, and tote bags.
#3- Buy a Beginner Friendly Sewing Machine
When starting out learning how to sew it can be tempting to buy the nicest, most expensive sewing machine that you see. But, this isn’t something that would be good for someone just starting out. When you are first learning how to sew, getting a more simple, basic machine does more than enough to teach the basics of sewing to someone brand new at it. More expensive sewing machines tend to have more advanced parts and features that while great for experienced sewers, may confuse beginners who are still learning the craft. When I first started sewing, I started with a simple sewing machine and learned from there!
#4- Use Online Resources
The Internet has tons of resources and tools for those who are learning how to sew. Use the internet to find sewing patterns and tools that will help you when making clothes and more. It’s also a great resource when looking for tutorials on basic sewing techniques, and a great resource when looking for ideas for projects!
#5- Have Fun!
Even though learning how to sew can be daunting, it is important to remember to have fun with it and to learn as you go. There’s no need to stress about it, and as you continue to practice more and more, you will eventually get the techniques down. Before you know it, you’ll be sewing your own clothes and things as well!
