How to Break Up With a Friend

Breaking up with a friend is far more difficult than breaking up with a boyfriend or girlfriend.

Going to a friend and telling them, “I don’t think this friendship is going to work out” is a horrifying thing to do. Here are the steps to follow in order to break up with a friend successfully.

  1. Confrontation- Communication is key when it comes to any type of relationship. The first step you can take is confronting the friend on whatever the problem is. For example, you can call them on the phone, FaceTime them, or even better: speak face to face. You can do this by pulling them to the side and tell them what’s going on, how you feel, and what can be done to fix it.
  2. Wait- The second step is to wait it out. After you have confronted this friend on what the problem is, you can wait to see if they are actually taking their time to fix it. Keep in mind that this wait doesn’t only take a couple of days. It can take up to a week or two.
  3. Take action- If the friend begins to fix the problem, then your friendship should thrive again. However, if they choose not to, then it may be necessary for you to start distancing yourself from this person. You can do this by finding new friends, or hanging out more with your other friends. Do not go to this friend again to explain something you already explained to them. However, if they ask about you being distant, then you can tell them that you have officially broken up with them.
