Our prom theme has been officially announced, and all that’s left is what to wear! The theme of Casablanca leaves a lot of wiggle room. There are a few ways that it could be interpreted: elevated midcentury fashion or jewel-toned inspired pieces alluding to the Moroccan City.
For Midcentury looks flowing dresses with short sleeves are the way to go. Many high-end and elegant gowns from the 1940s were Grecian-inspired and floor-length with simple silhouettes. Other evening gowns had, as stated earlier, short sleeves and the flouncy princess-style skirt with a cinched-in bodice. Materials and fabrics such as tulles and net fabric along with the silk dupe Rayon became popular because silk was rationed for military use. But silk dresses are a popular prom fabric in the early 21st century now. If you can afford natural fabrics silk would be a great choice, but for less expensive options velvet and rayon are the way to go.
Now for the other influence. As one of the biggest artificial ports in the world, the Moroccan city of Casablanca is known for its financial importance and striking architecture and so whatever you wear to prom must reflect that. As stated in the article debuting the theme, jewel tones are listed as a major influence. Because it is also known as the “White City” I think cool colors would work well with the theme if vibrant tones aren’t your thing. The website Morocco Travel is a great resource if you want more inspiration directly from the country. The Kaftan or Caftan they show all have beautiful trims in gold and lace and are reserved for special occasions that are perfect for a Moroccan-inspired prom! Similarly, the Takchita is also worn on special occasions and is layered with a kaftan underneath a transparent layer.
Either way, you go this prom season there are so many options that won’t fail! Whether it be 1940s chic or traditionally inspired beautiful gowns there are so many options to let you be fashionable and have fun at our prom!
