“Why Didn’t He Kick the Ball?!”

On Sunday, September 24, the Miami Dolphins took the field in their home opener against the Denver Broncos. The Dolphins came out and put on a historical performance winning the game 70-20 scoring the most points ever in franchise history. Running backs De’von Achane and Raheem Mostert combined for a total of eight touchdowns, scoring four touchdowns each. Quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa threw 23/26 for 309 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Tyreek Hill had 9 receptions, 157 yards, and 1 touchdown. Defensively, the Dolphins caused 2 turnovers and held the Broncos to 2 touchdowns the entire game.  After De’von Achane’s 68-yard touchdown midway in the 4th quarter to extend the lead to 70-20, the Dolphins offense ended up back on the field creeping into Broncos territory.  With a little less than 2 minutes left, the fans started chanting “3 more points” because the Dolphins were 3 more points away from breaking the record for most points scored in a single game in NFL history which is currently 72 points.

Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel made the interesting call to not kick a field goal to give the Dolphins 73 points and break the record.  Instead, the Dolphins had their backup quarterback take a knee to give the ball back to the Broncos.  The game then ended with the Dolphins winning by a score of 70-20.  However, Mike McDaniel’s call to not kick the ball was very questionable. The Dolphins would have made NFL history.

Dolphins fans around the world are still questioning why Mike McDaniel didn’t attempt to break the record.  We even asked Coach Hector, who is a Dolphins fan himself if he would’ve kicked the ball and he said, “Absolutely!”  However, we asked Sophomore basketball player, Trent Nixon, if he would’ve kicked the field goal to break the record and he said, “No, out of respect I wouldn’t have gone for the record.”  The Dolphins are now off to a 3-0 start but head coach Mike McDaniel’s decision will go down in history as one of the most questionable in NFL history.

What's Up! My name is Tre Robinson, and this is my third year on The Tribe! I am in 11th grade and very interested in sports, especially the broadcasting and communication of sports.  I am also an athlete here at Santaluces playing varsity football.  I've played this sport since the age of 5 and I hope to have a college and professional career then become a sports broadcaster one day.
