This Wednesday was Key Club’s interest meeting here at Santaluces! Key Club is a club that encourages community involvement and provides opportunities to earn community service hours. It is run by students passionate about engaging with the community. Wednesday’s meeting was a success, with about 90 people in attendance.
At the meeting, the officers went over club expectations. Key Club members are expected to participate in events and attend meetings. Some events Key Club participates in are Relay for Life and the Haunted House. The club also provides many other opportunities to earn community service hours, such as completing Free Rice and recording your steps on Charity Miles. Moreover, members have to pay dues. For seniors, the fee is $25, and for every other grade, it is $20. Seniors pay an extra $5 to receive a cord to wear at graduation.
After reviewing the expectations, the officers introduced themselves. Xiao Yuan is the president of Key Club, and Grace Hanley is the Vice President. Along with the president and vice president, Key Club has a historian, secretary, treasurer, and an officer for each grade that keeps track of the members’ community service hours.

I had the chance to talk to the president of Key Club, Xiao Yuan, and ask her a few questions about the club. When asked about her favorite things about Key Club, she said that she loves the members, the positive environment, and the relaxed atmosphere. Her favorite event that Key Club participated in last year was Relay For Life. At Relay For Life, Key Club set up a decorative table and sold merchandise to raise money for cancer. Members who participated in the event got community service hours, as that is the main component of the club. For this year, Xiao said she is most excited for “performing service with more members this year.”
Following the officer introductions, we played an icebreaker game. During the game, people had to get in groups with people who shared the same interests or facts as them. For example, we had to find a group of people who share the same favorite color as us. The game was very energetic and entertaining. Everybody in the club participated, even the club sponsor, Mr.Olthoff.
Overall, Key Club’s interest meeting was a huge success. Many people attended the meeting and showed interest in joining the club. The first meeting is on Wednesday, September 24th, in the lecture hall after school. It’s not too late to join Key Club and get involved in the community!
