Every year, members of Hollywood’s Screen Actors union honor the best in acting for movies and television. The awards are usually a preview of the Oscars later this month. This year, the show took a political turn because it aired just a few days after President Trump signed an executive order barring immigrants from seven majority-Muslim countries. Speeches promoting unity came from Taraji P. Henson on behalf of the winning best drama ensemble in a movie for “Hidden Figures” and from “Stranger Things” actor Gaten Matarazzo who spoke passionately as Winona Ryder’s expressions created a flurry of Twitter comments. Dolly Parton presented the lifetime achievement award to Lily Tomlin, who offered advice to younger actors.
