As someone who loves scary movies, they also terrify me; most times I am constantly looking away from the gruesome scenes and jumpscares. So, 8 times out of 10, I resort to thriller/mystery movies. They give me almost the same feel and reactions depending on how good their plot twists are. So, from hearing about The Housemaid and watching the trailer, I just knew it was going to be good. A housemaid that isn’t actually who she says she is really caught my attention. But let me tell you, that wasn’t even the best part…
As the movie starts, you see an innocent young lady named Millie who desperately needs a job and comes to this rich family of 3 for a housemaid position. At first, everything is fine but, later on, as Millie makes a mistake of accidentally throwing away important papers, the wife, Nina, goes ballistic and starts throwing/breaking dishes, slamming drawers and cabinets, and screaming at the top of her lungs at Millie. She looks absolutely insane but, then, her husband comes to comfort her as if this is normal and okay. So at this point I’m not even concerned with the fact the housemaid has a secret because this crazy wife looks like she’s going to do more damage if Millie makes one more mistake. I also am very impressed with how calm and patient the husband was, but oh how I was wrong about him. The movie continues and the wife is just pulling crazy stunt after crazy stunt, making Mille look like a bad housemaid, and this makes the husband feel bad for Millie. So every time the husband has to save Mille from the crazy wife, Mille and the husband get closer and closer to the point they go out together get drunk and sleep together at a hotel. At this point I’m terrified for how the wife is going to react because she is completely insane. During one of her crazy outbursts to Millie, she cussed at her and told her to stay away from her husband. To top it off they go back to the house and do it again because the wife wasn’t home.
You guys don’t understand how upset I was, like they know she’s crazy but insist on doing things that would probably make her kill somebody. Why? Just why? Fast forward she comes back home calm acting like everything was okay but soon broke because she knew what they did and was ready to scream at Millie and fire her, but the husband finally put his foot down and kicked her out since he owns the house. This was the craziest part: the wife slapped Mille and left relieved, laughing at the situation, which confused me for a second, but this was where the plot twist came into frame. Moving forward Millie and the husband are now living a happy life together with no craziness from the wife, but were they actually? We get a scene of the crazy wife enjoying herself in a hotel room, happy she is away, but then she also begins reading a letter she wrote for her daughter in case she passed away, and oh my gosh, the secrets this letter revealed. My mouth was open in the theater for like 10 minutes straight believe it or not, but let me tell you guys about this letter.
It starts off with the mom admitting her daughter isn’t the husband’s but actually a professor’s that got her pregnant when she was younger in college and abandoned her. So as time went by she was a single mom trying to make do in an office firm and constantly belittled by the men in higher positions than her. This was also where she met Andrew, her husband. He came to her apologizing for the rudeness from the coworkers and took her out to eat. She falls in love but admits it was her biggest mistake and it was all a trap. They move in together and she soon becomes a rich housewife, but one day Andrew locks her in an attic just because her roots were growing in. Like, huh? You lock ur wife in the attic because of her hair? What kind of psychotic thing is that?! To top it off, he asks her to rip out 100 follicles of her hair and slip it under the door. Again, what is actually wrong with this man? The man everyone thought was so patient for staying with her was actually the crazy one. Are you kidding me right now? At first she didn’t agree for days, but she needed to see her daughter and couldn’t leave her in the hands of this crazy man. So she does it and gives it to him, then boom, he insists that she did it wrong because one of them didn’t include a follicle and she has to do it again. The irritation that built in me at this moment couldn’t be described, I was livid. To top it off, even though it seems like he already did, once he let her free he gave her drugged water (which she obviously didn’t refuse since she didn’t eat or drink for days) causing her to pass out while he put her daughter in a tub full of water. He framed her and made her seem like she was the crazy one and made it seem like she tried to kill her daughter. She was sent to a ward, which makes sense why she was so crazy: it was all the husband’s fault.
At this point in the movie I have no more words and not sure if this movie can even end in a happily ever after. The wife then admits she gave Millie this job because the husband has a weird interest for ladies in need and wanting to control them, so she knew he would want Millie. So now I’m on the complete edge of what’s going to happen to Millie. Then boom, it starts: Millie accidentally breaks Andrew’s grandma’s china dishes so he decides to drug Mille and lock her in the attic. But the craziest part is her task to be free: she had to cut a line on her stomach for each china dish his grandma owned using the dish she broke. Literally insane. This guy is just insane, like who does he even think he is, for real? However Millie actually did it with a plan in mind to trap him inside and make him go crazy, and it works. I was so proud and thought she was going to be safe, she’s literally already made him pull out his tooth as he begs to come out, but boom, the wife comes in with good intentions trying to save Millie, not knowing she already got the job done and accidently lets the husband free. I was so mad, all that hard work was wasted, but thankfully with both of them there they defeated and killed him. Then my favorite part was Millie and the wife actually ended on good terms, and Millie went on to help other families with a controlling husband, giving hopes for a House Maid 2, but I’m not too sure on that.
If I were to rate this movie I’d give it an 10/10. I loved the plot twist and it ended in a happy way. Every evil character got what they deserved, and those in trouble were saved. So I do recommend everyone to watch this movie if you love a good thriller.
