2019 is the year for the Marvel cinematic universe, with multiple films in the franchise coming out. Captain Marvel was the first of the year, coming out on March 8th in U.S theaters. The film, set in the 1990s, follows the journey of Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes. In the movie, e a galactic war between aliens reaches Earth and Danvers finds herself at the center of it all.

The trailer gives the audience a sneak peek into the plot of the movie including a jump into a past and present timeline which informs the audience on the basics of Captain Marvel’s character and her backstory without giving the whole story away and leaving the people wanting more. Some parts of the trailer might be confusing for some people, such as the scene in the trailer where Captain Marvel punches an old lady on the train. Those who have not read the comics and are not educated on Captain Marvel’s character will be left wondering why this happened. However, this could be a good thing because then they will want to know what caused this action to occur. The trailer provided its audience with enough shots to keep long-standing and new Marvel fans engaged and eager for the movie to come out.

On March 8th, the movie was officially released. Movie theaters were packed with die-hard Marvel fans and newcomers. Like the trailer showed, the movie opens up with Kree warrior Vers  (Brie Larson) having a realistic dream about her life from 6 years ago as Carol Danvers. The flashbacks continue on throughout the movie as Captain Marvel tries to figure out where she came from. The movie also included background information about Marvel characters that were introduced in the other Marvel movies which allowed the audience to become more informed on their backstory as well. The sequence of the movie was put together in a way that was not challenging for the audience to follow. One main thing that the movie captured was how Marvel implemented the 1990s theme through its use of the cars, soundtrack and the reference of the movie store “Blockbuster.”

Not only was Captain Marvel a heroic movie, it was also very inspirational. It included many great scenes and moments that emphasize women empowerment and fearlessness. I would encourage those who have not seen it to go and do it soon.
