Les Miserables is the musical story of an ex-convict named Jean Valjean. Valjean has been imprisoned for 19 years after stealing a loaf of bread. Javert is the parole officer who is determined to punish Valjean for his crimes. Valjean destroys his identification papers and creates a new life for himself as a mayor. After a poor woman named Fantine passes away, Valjean takes her young daughter Cosette into his care. Valjean must protect Cosette and escape Javert’s wrath throughout the course of the story.

On Sunday, October 20th my family and I saw the musical Les Misérables at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts. South Floridians clearly enjoy the show and come out to see it time and time again; ‘Les Mis’ has come to South Florida a total of six times since the year 1994. The cast of this particular rendition of Les Mis travels across the nation to perform the iconic musical show. The performers withstood the high expectations that came with their experience on Sunday for me and my family.

The Les Mis soundtrack holds countless hits that have touched audiences since the play’s opening in 1985. Some of the standout songs include ‘On My Own,’ ‘I Dreamed a Dream,’ and ‘Bring Him Home.’ Fans who aren’t able to attend live performances of Les Mis have multiple soundtracks they can enjoy in the comfort of their own homes. However, the excitement of live performance is always one that audiences should value.

The cast of Les Mis had beautiful voices and the sets were incredible works of art. The musical will surely come back to Florida some time soon considering the outpour of love it receives after each performance. I have been a big fan of Les Mis since the movie came out in 2012. My best friend and I learned every song and made sure to sing them everywhere we went. As you can imagine, I was very excited to see the play on Sunday as well. Despite my high expectations, I was satisfied, and even impressed, with the performance. Next time Les Mis returns to Florida, I would highly recommend seeing it with friends or family.
